The Rabindra Bharati University campus witnessed high drama on Friday when a non-teaching staff member died after being allegedly punched by some students and an assistant professor later threatened those protesting the death with a revolver.






KOLKATA: The Rabindra Bharati University campus witnessed high drama on Friday when a non-teaching staff member died after being allegedly punched by some students and an assistant professor later threatened those protesting the death with a revolver.

Basudeb Nandy, 58, fell unconscious after he was fisted in the chest by the students of the Visual Arts department in the Emerald Bower campus when he asked them to remove their parked motorcycles which were inconveniencing others, police said.

Nandi was rushed to nearby RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and was declared brought dead.

When employees of the university began protesting the death of Nandi, an assistant professor of the Visual Arts department Surojit Chanda allegedly brandished a revolver and threatened to shoot them, they said.

Five students Souvik Biswas, Surojit Das, Biswajit Halder, Nilanjan Das and Sommohan Dey of the Visual Arts department and the assistant professor have been arrested, they said.

DCP (North) in-charge S Chanda went to the university after being informed.

Higher education minister Bratya Basu along with special commissioners Sivaji Ghosh and Rajib Mishra, also visited the premise.
