Top 10: Most spoken languages in the world



We know what are the most populated countries, we know what are the most poorest countries, however most of us do not know what are the most spoken languages in the world. To avoid confusions, we mention that the top below was created not judging by the speakers world wide, but only based on the number of native speakers of each language.

10. Germany – 90 million native speakers

The German language, as the name suggests, is the official language of Germany. It is also official language is Austria, Lichtenstein, Luxemburg but also in Belgium ( along with  Dutch and French ) and Switzerland. Further more, it is also recognized as a minority  language in Poland, Denmark, Hungary and Czech.

9. The Japanese language – 132 million native speakers

The Japanese language is the official language of Japan. Most native japanese speakers do not live in Japan, but in Korea, United States and Europe. The Japanese language is also the official language of the Palau republic.

8. Russian language – 144 million native speakers

The russian language is part of the slave language family, a family that also includes languages from Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Serbia, etc. Other countries where Russian is the official language are Belarus, Ukrain and Kazakhstan.

7. The Portuguese language  – 178 million native speakers

Like other romantic languages, Portuguese is a descendant of the Latin language. It is the official language of Portugal and Brazil. Most native speakers of this language are living in these two countries. Further more, it is the official language of Angola, Mozambique. We have to mention that the portuguese language is the forth most learned language of the world, with approximately 30 million people.

6. The Bengali language – 181 million native speakers

Bengali is part of the Indian language family, along with Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu. The biggest number of speakers are living in Bangladesh, and this is also their official language. Other speakers of this language are living in Tripura and Assam.

5. The Arabic Language – 221 million native speakers

The arabic language is most commonly associated with the Middle east and North Africa. It is the official language of 26 countries and there are speakers in the United States and Europe. Some of the countries where the arabic language is the official language are: Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Kuweit, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, etc.

4. Hindu Urdu – 242 million native speakers

Hindi Urdu is a language that was two official forms, Hindi and Urdu. Hindi is the official language of India while Urdu is the official language of Pakistan. In other words, the first language is used by Indians and the second one is used by the Muslim population.

3. The English language – 328 million native speakers

Although this language developed itself in the British islands, the biggest number of native english speakers are living in the United States of America. English is also the official language in 53 countries, including Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Jamaica and New Zealand.

English is also the official language of many organizations like UN, NATO and European Union.

2. The Spanish language – 329 million native speakers

The Spanish language is one of the most popular languages in the world, being also the official language of more than 20 countries, including all the states of Latin America, except Brazil, Belize, etc. The biggest countries with Spanish speaking population is Mexico.

1. The Mandarin language – 845 million native speakers

The mandarin language is also known as Chinese, but is is actually just one of the Chinese languages in the world. It is the official language of China and Taiwan. It is also spoken in Indonesia, Singapore, Macau, Philippines and also in large Chinese communities like Australia, Canada, Peru or Russia.
