Infant deaths not due to medical negligence- Mamata
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has dismissed the allegation made by
oppositions that medical negligence is responsible for the growing
death of infants in state hospitals in Malda and Murshidabad. While
addressing the issue she said that in Malda 8000 babies are born outside
hospitals and in Murshidabad the unofficial birth records reveals to
almost thousands babies. These babies when brought to hospitals are
usuaally in very critical conditions and therefore it becomes very
difficult to save them. Yet if any hospital staff is found guilty he
will be punished severely.
Further chief minister focused on early marriages of women in
villages i.e before attaining 18 years and as a result their child
always weighs around 500 to 600 gm resulting critical health condition
of babies which leads to death. She further said that early marriage is a
social crime but when the pregnant teens visit hospital for admission
it is inhumane for hospital authorities to refuse them. Chief minister
further mentioned that as per the union government figures, Bengal now
has a lower infant mortality rate than many states like Uttar Pradesh,
Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir and
Karnataka.
